To refer to ai3 as an agency merely tells part of the story. In actuality, ai3 is an collaboration of disciplines, values, and personalities. Think of it as one part agency to three parts collective. ai3 was founded, in part, on the principle of organized chaos, an idea that works best when multiple voices are present. As such, the individuals of ai3 bring a wide range of expertise and ideas to the table. Skilled architects, interior designers, product designers, artists, and musicians, they are a diverse and highly functioning collaborative, unified by a common set of values and a desire to create.

As a founding Partner of ai3, it is safe to say that Lucy Aiken-Johnson, ASID, IIDA, put the “i” in ai3. A practicing Interior Designer since 1994, Lucy has won numerous awards for interior design and product development. Her appreciation for her craft stems from her understanding of design as a powerful problem-solving tool. As such, Lucy is known for her ability to articulate design solutions by telling the stories behind them.

A natural narrator, Lucy has earned a reputation for being an engaging presenter and speaker. With all things, her approach is to tell the story behind her ideas, stories which are deeply informed by Lucy’s intelligence and attention to detail. Her talent for design is reinforced by her dedication to research. In 2008, the American Society of Interior Designers presented the prestigious ASID Georgia Chapter Design Achievement Award for her significant career portfolio of exceptional design work and for her dedication to excellence in interior design.  She has helped lead ai3 to 20+ awards for interior design and product development including ai3's recognition as 2016 Southeast Contract Designer of the Year from ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center).

Over the course of her career, she has designed interiors for corporate, restaurant, retail, hospitality, showrooms, and large-scale cultural arts center clients. She has led numerous product development teams, designing multiple textile collections and architecturally-inspired furnishings.

For Patrick Johnson, AIA, architecture has a responsibility to people. A founding Partner of ai3, whose career portfolio ranges from children’s hospitals, cancer centers, and senior centers to restaurants, corporate offices and product development, Patrick has designed environments and products with the goal of improving lives.

Working in architecture and design since 1993, Patrick is known for his fresh perspective, always finding unique entry points to projects. His strengths lie in his ability to connect with people one-on-one, and for his willingness to step back and ask simple questions that often lead to project breakthroughs.

Clients relationships are significant to Patrick Johnson. He recognizes the value in his clients’ input and fosters strong professional relationships by relating to his clients what to expect in the design process. An accomplished artist, Patrick Johnson can quickly turn a thumbnail sketch into a recognized project or diagram components of a project to illustrate the “big idea” to a client. In 2006, Patrick was named one of Atlanta’s “Top 20 Under 40” designers by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine. His personal paintings are displayed at MasonMurer Gallery in Atlanta.

Kerry Wittwer is a tinkerer. For most of her life, she’s held a fascination for how things come together and work, so it seems fitting that, at age seven, she knew she wanted to be an architect. Since beginning her career in architecture and design, Kerry has developed a reputation for her technical aptitude. She is also known for skill, creating drawings that communicate the story. Kerry is a LEED-accredited professional with experience in corporate office, large-scale mixed-use, interior hotel renovations, international work and information technology. She has been instrumental in leading ai3’s LEED-Certified projects, including Tandus Flooring’s Atlanta showroom, ai3’s offices, and the offices and manufacturing facility for Cobham Composite Products. Kerry earned a bachelor degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, where she served for two years as president of the student chapter for Construction Specifications Institute and, during which time, she led a session at the CSI National Convention in Los Angeles.

For most of his life, Kellen Minor has held an interest in architecture. Beginning with a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House as a child and, later, with a summer visit to architecture camp, Minor has long admired the influence of architecture in society. In 2011, he was selected to showcase his work in the "Light Up Atlanta" exhibition that featured the city's best designers. Minor's "Seed Bench" was showcased in the Peachtree Center MARTA station.

Minor studied Architecture at Southern Illinois University and earned a Masters of Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining ai3, he was part of multiple studios at tvsdesign where he worked on projects ranging from large scale mixed-use developments in the International Studio to an award winning interfaith chapel at the University of Tampa while working in the Design for Learning studio. Since joining the team at ai3, Minor has enjoyed the opportunity to downsize. He appreciates being able to focus on the process and on pushing the limits of design in ways other than scale.

As someone who has experience with a wide range of projects, Chris Carfora has a deep appreciation for the details that make design work. Whether his focus has been on small interior spaces or large-scale convention centers and hi-rise buildings, Chris has learned to value the technical aspects of architecture. For Chris, architecture is an inside-out process. It begins with thinking creatively about the way things come together. In doing so, the work evolves organically.

Since coming to ai3, Chris Carfora has enjoyed being part of a team that also works well together. Being involved with the client from the very beginning isn’t something most project architects experience. But, at ai3, Chris has seen what a difference it makes, both for the architect and the client.

Education

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Media - University of Florida, 2006
Masters of Fine Arts in Interior Design - Savannah College of Art and Design, 2012

Jillian Rooker is a stickler for details. Whether it’s the drape of a particular fabric or the patina of an aged piece of iron, she believes in getting it right. While studying for her BFA in Film & Media at the University of Florida, she spent her summers in New York working for DreamWorks, and other companies, assisting with production. After graduation she tapped into the burgeoning film scene in Austin, Texas where she worked as a set dresser. During this time, Rooker learned first hand how important details are to transforming a space. The transition from film to hospitality design was a logical choice for Rooker, and she went on to earn an MFA in Interior Design from The Savannah College of Art and Design.

Rooker was introduced to ai3 while at SCAD and was immediately drawn to the firm’s fresh and contemporary aesthetic. She joined the team in 2011 and since that time, Rooker remains impressed by ai3’s ability to design iconic, timeless spaces that can’t be tied to trends. She credits ai3’s process with its evolving aesthetic and cites the open access she has to clients as a major influence in her own work.

heather rice

Designer

Education

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design – Savannah College of Art and Design, 2011

Heather Rice can’t help but love art and design. She comes by it honestly. With a legacy that includes her father, an architect; her grandmother, a painter; and grandfather, a sculptor; Heather Rice is hardwired for creativity. A graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Heather is a talented graphic artist as well as an accredited interior designer. While in school, Heather interned with ai3 for over two years, and since joining the team fulltime, she has acclimated well to the multi-faceted approach of the agency. One minute she may be building 3D models or sketching textile patterns, the next minute she might be finding the perfect dining chair.  A self-proclaimed nerd, Heather is a technology sponge and has earned respect at ai3 for her ability to infuse all of her projects with innovation. For Heather, the best part of her job is presenting to the client, when she’s taken their words, created something visual to give back and they love it.
