Whimsical and edgy, this burger boutique is a clever interpretation of what it means to flip and to “flip out.”

Burger madness has found its home at Flip Burger Boutique. Only at Flip can one come face to face with a venison burger cleverly stacked with gooseberry relish, brie, and mushroom jam — and only at Flip is such a delicacy served between two buns. With two locations in Atlanta and one in Birmingham, Alabama, Flip Burger Boutique has turned the iconic American burger joint upside down.

The menu at Flip is the brainchild of Owner Barry Mills and Chef Richard Blais, an undoubtedly experimental figure in the food world. Known for his forays into molecular gastronomy and use of cutting-edge techniques, such as freezing milkshakes with liquid nitrogen, Blais and Mills enlisted the help of ai3 to design a space for Flip that was equally radical. The result is nothing short of madness.

Whimsical and edgy, this burger boutique is a clever interpretation of what it means to flip and to “flip out.” To that end, a series of custom inverted booths line one wall of the restaurant. Deeply tufted, white booths give the appearance of dining within padded cells. Flip’s predominately white color scheme is punctuated with black and red accents, generating intensity and lending itself perfectly to the high-energy atmosphere that Mills and Blais requested. Equally stimulating is the large wall covering designed specifically for the space. The Flip mural features wild and colorful graphics layered to simultaneously hide and reveal a multitude of images.

Levity is central to the restaurant’s approach and its design. However light-hearted, Flip achieves an equal air of sophistication and style. The white palette is crisp and contemporary when translated into a series of baroque mirrors that hang behind the counter. Beneath the same counter, a row of stools reference diners of the past, but are finished in white vinyl for an entirely modern aesthetic. Behind them, white communal tables run atop red carpeting, offering a dynamic and lively centerpiece for the space.
